Market Overview

Increasing Power Consumption and the Need for Higher Densities are Driving the Global Demand for PDU Products

The doubling of electricity consumption by data centers all over the world from 2000 to 2005 represents an aggregate power consumption growth rate of 14 percent per year for the United States and 16 percent for the rest of the world. If this trend persists, as it is expected to, the amount of power needed to run the world's data center servers could increase by an additional 40 percent by 2010. These higher power density requirements are turning the spotlight on energy efficiency. "The rising interest in energy efficiency is forcing companies to take a more proactive approach to energy efficiency by implementing power distribution plans that will help them better understand and control the way electricity is consumed," says the analyst of this research. "PDU vendors that offer power management solutions will compete successfully in this market."

With companies increasingly spending on IT services and software as well as the rising use of virtualization and blade servers, the PDU market is on a high. Vendors are looking to take advantage of this demand by adding new functionalities. "There is an escalating need for more intelligent PDUs with remote power management, monitoring capabilities, granular metering, and environmental management," notes the analyst. "Information provided by these kinds of products can be used to improve energy management in the facility and to understand how power is being consumed."

However, vendors of such advanced PDUs sell their units along with associated software, which increases the complexity of the sales process. Vendors can circumvent this challenge by educating customers to make optimum use of the information offered by the metering features of the PDU. Greater awareness of PDUs' functionalities will augment the demand for these products. "Limited knowledge regarding PDUs' technical attributes can limit end users' ability to distinguish between low-end and high-end products," observes the analyst. "This forces companies to devise methods to educate customers."
